چکیده

This paper investigates the effects of smoothed bootstrap iterations on coverage probabilities of smoothed bootstrap and bootstrap-t confidence intervals for population quantiles, and establishes the optimal kernel bandwidths at various stages of the smoothing procedures. The conventional smoothed bootstrap and bootstrap-t methods have been known to yield one-sided coverage errors of orders O(n) and o(n), respectively, for intervals based on the sample quantile of a random sample of size n. We sharpen the latter result to O(n) with proper choices of bandwidths at the bootstrapping and Studentization steps. We show further that calibration of the nominal coverage level by means of the iterated bootstrap succeeds in reducing the coverage error of the smoothed bootstrap percentile interval to the order O(n) and that of the smoothed bootstrap-t interval to O(n), provided that bandwidths are selected of appropriate orders. Simulation results confirm our asymptotic findings, suggesting that the iterated smoothed bootstrap-t method yields the most accurate coverage. On the other hand, the iterated smoothed bootstrap percentile method interval has the advantage of being shorter and more stable than the bootstrap-t intervals.

Confidence Intervals for Lower Quantiles Based on Two-Sample Scheme

In this paper, a new two-sampling scheme is proposed to construct appropriate confidence intervals for the lower population quantiles. The confidence intervals are determined in the parametric and nonparametric set up and the optimality problem is discussed in each case. Finally, the proposed procedure is illustrated via a real data set.

Bootstrapping Sample Quantiles of Discrete Data

Sample quantiles are consistent estimators for the true quantile and satisfy central limit theorems (CLTs) if the underlying distribution is continuous. If the distribution is discrete, the situation is much more delicate. In this case, sample quantiles are known to be not even consistent in general for the population quantiles. In a motivating example, we show that Efron’s bootstrap does not c...

Bootstrap confidence intervals for design storms from exceedance series

The design quantiles of storms are derived directly in terms of design life and the risk of occurrence. Estimators for these quantiles based on exceedance series are discussed for the cases of Poisson and negative binomial storm arrival processes. The use of Bootstrap methods to estimate confidence intervals for the design quantiles is demonstrated. Interval de confiance "bootstrap" pour les av...

Bootstrap confidence intervals of CNpk for type‑II generalized log‑logistic distribution

This paper deals with construction of confidence intervals for process capability index using bootstrap method (proposed by Chen and Pearn in Qual Reliab Eng Int 13(6):355–360, 1997) by applying simulation technique. It is assumed that the quality characteristic follows type-II generalized log-logistic distribution introduced by Rosaiah et al. in Int J Agric Stat Sci 4(2):283–292, (2008). Discu...
